I am an Actress, Draper-Tailor and Interdisciplinary Artist from Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico.
Through the use of Semiotics (the study and application of symbols), I conceptualize, costume and perform highly dramatized versions of my experiences as a Trans Woman of color, while aligning myself with the sensibilities of Drag. The most common mediums in my work are ink, Pencil, Textiles, Video and Performance.
I aim to elevate the process of tailoring custom garments from a craft that is highly gate kept, into accessible artwork where the audience can feel free to engage, ask questions and learn something new.
I employ a bilateral approach to character creation: Inner character work, as well as building from the outside inward, which has become an integral part of my preparation as a performer.
We all have a relationship to clothing, It influences how we interact with the world around us.
The manipulation of thread and cloth is typically associated with femininity, which is what initially attracted me to it as a way to affirm my gender identity.
However, it has been undervalued and underpaid for millennia as it is considered 'Women's domestic work' thus further cementing the gap in wages between men and women and between Cis and Trans people .
Part of my practice involves investigating and keeping these specialty skills alive and accessible to other queer people. In the current age of fast fashion where clothing is made poorly and unethically; altering, mending or making your own clothing becomes a revolutionary act.
